Suit up! Why our kids wear a Gi on the mat.
For adults, our BJJ program is NoGi. If we’re a NoGi focused Martial Arts school, so why do we put our kids in a gi?
For our kids program, the Gi is more than just traditional attire. It's a tool we use both to train the body, but also the mind! It's more than just a piece of fabric to grab onto. Below are just a few reasons why wearing the Gi is an essential part of our kid’s BJJ program.
It Triggers the “Focus Mode” Switch
When your child puts on their gi, and ties their body, there's magic happening. The simple act of putting it on sends signals to the brain: it's time to train. Those signals help the brain lock in. It’s no longer leisure time, it’s time to focus, put in the effort, and be part of a team.
It Eliminates Distractions
Unlike street clothes, with superheroes, pokemon, or sweet geometric designs, Gis are mostly plain, muted colors and don’t cause distractions. You don’t have to worry about whether your clothes are too baggy, your pants too long, or if your child's favorite shirt is going to get too sweaty.
It Creates a Transition Ritual
There's also a ritual effect to putting your gi on and tying your belt. It serves as a quick and easy mindfulness routine. Humans are creatures of habit, and this ritual can ease the transition from after school to training time.
It Makes Training Smoother (and Safer)
And, as an instructor, having kids in gi’s means I don’t have to constantly get on to the little ones grabbing each other's clothes because they’re supposed to grab the gi! That's a huge advantage, and means class runs smoother and the kids don’t feel like I’m constantly getting onto them.
It provides Visual Goals and Pride
Another benefit of having the kids wear a gi is they get a constant visual reminder of their rank and the work they've put in. They can see their stripes and the color of their belt, and so can everyone else.
It builds Belonging and Team Identity
The last benefit I’m going to talk about is the belonging effect. When you put a special uniform on (whether it's here at the gym, a job, a different sports team or club or anything) it serves as an identity reminder. I belong here, and I’m part of something bigger.
There are many reasons why a gym owner may choose to (or not to) put their kids in a gi, but for us, it’s all about helping your child focus, grow and succeed.
