Kickboxing vs Heavy Bag HIIT: What’s the Difference?

If you’re looking at classes at Underdog Martial Arts, you’ll probably see both Kickboxing and Heavy Bag HIIT on the schedule.

They both involve punching and kicking.
They both will get you sweating.

But they are not the same thing.

The difference comes down to one word:

Intent.

Kickboxing: Skill First

Kickboxing at Underdog Martial Arts is about learning a craft.

You’re not just hitting things to get tired.
You’re learning how to actually strike with purpose, timing, and control.

In a typical class, you’ll work on:

  • Proper stance and footwork

  • Clean, efficient punching and kicking mechanics

  • Timing and distance

  • Padwork with a partner

  • Controlled drills that simulate real application

This is where you learn how to fight, or at the very least, how to move like someone who knows what they’re doing.

It’s technical.
It’s intentional.
It’s a skill you build over time.

We say it all the time:

Kickboxing isn’t cardio. It’s craft.

Yes, you’ll get in great shape. But that’s a byproduct of doing something real.

Heavy Bag HIIT: Fitness First

Heavy Bag HIIT is built for one goal:

Get you in incredible shape without needing experience.

The structure is simple and effective:

  • Quick warm-up

  • High-intensity circuit (AMRAPs, intervals, repeaters)

  • 4 x 3-minute rounds on the heavy bag

  • A mix of guided combos and freestyle work

You’ll still throw punches and kicks.
You’ll still learn some basics.

But the focus is not on mastering technique.

The focus is on:

  • Heart rate

  • Work output

  • Conditioning

  • Burning off stress

It’s fast-paced, approachable, and designed so anyone can walk in and get after it.

No experience required. No pressure to “get it right.”

Just show up and move.

The Real Difference (Simple Version)

If you strip it down:

  • Kickboxing = Skill development with fitness included

  • Heavy Bag HIIT = Fitness training with striking included

Both are valuable. They just serve different purposes.

Which One Should You Choose?

If your goal is to:

Learn real striking skills
Go with Kickboxing.

Get in shape fast and have fun doing it
Go with Heavy Bag HIIT.

Not sure yet?
Try both.

A lot of our members do.

They’ll take Kickboxing to build skill, and Heavy Bag HIIT to push their conditioning.

That combination works really well.

Final Thought

You don’t need experience to start either one.

You just need to show up.

We’ll meet you where you are and help you build from there.
