Don’t wait for January…
What’s up, Asheville?
Coach Brian here from Underdog Martial Arts, your local home for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Kickboxing in Asheville, NC.
I’ve been training in MMA and BJJ since 2013 and became a certified personal trainer in 2017. Over the years, I’ve seen tons of people start and stop their training — and it usually comes down to one thing: burnout.
Here’s the pattern I see all the time:
Someone joins the gym fired up, training five or six days a week. They’re all in. But before long, life catches up. Maybe they get injured, feel exhausted, or lose balance with family and work. Instead of resting, they push harder — until they burn out and quit.
That’s why I always tell beginners to start slow — 2 to 3 days a week is plenty. It’s about building consistency, not perfection.
Why Fall Is the Best Time to Start BJJ or Kickboxing
Even with the holidays coming up — actually, because of them — fall is the ideal time to begin training. Those built-in breaks (travel, family time, big meals) give your body and mind a chance to adjust to your new martial arts routine.
If you wait until January, you’ll be hitting the mats or heavy bag with no rest in sight — and that’s when burnout sneaks in. You’re motivated, sure, but with no downtime, the routine becomes unsustainable fast.
And honestly — the days are getting shorter, the weather’s cooling down, and it’s the perfect season to add something new that keeps you moving, confident, and connected.
Whether you’re interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Kickboxing, training at Underdog Martial Arts in Asheville gives you the best of both worlds: practical self-defense, a great workout, and an encouraging community.
You can’t out-train what you can’t recover from.
Train smart. Start slow. Enjoy the process.
See you on the mats,
Coach Brian
